NHS Cervical Screening programme has introduced digital invitations and reminders via the NHS App.

Patients who are eligible for a cervical screening will now receive invitations and reminders through the NHS App and SMS (text) messages to notify them to book their appointment.

All invitations will guide patients to book appointments with a member of the Surgery Nursing Team in the usual way.

By putting invitations and reminders straight in women’s pockets on their phones, we’re making it easier than ever to take up screening appointments.

Dr Sue Mann, NHS National Clinical Director for Women’s Health

For those where a digital invitation through the NHS App is not possible or where a follow-up SMS (text) message cannot be delivered (including where people do not have a recorded mobile phone), a letter will be posted to the patient’s address, as recorded on the patient’s NHS GP clinical system, as a backup.

We encourage patients to download the NHS App and enable notifications. NHS App uses notifications to tell you when you have a new message.

How to manage your notification preferences in the NHS App

  1. Log in to the NHS App.
  2. Select the Account icon in the top corner.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Follow the link to your device settings.

Turning your notifications on or off may take up to 24 hours to take effect.

If you use the NHS App on multiple devices, you will need to allow notifications on each device.
